Enrolment Eligibility
Enrolment eligibility for international students is based on visa or citizenship status. Some visa types may be subject to additional requirements or fees before enrolling in WA government schools.
It is very important to check the information supplied by TAFE International WA (TIWA) to find out the exact enrolment rules and any associated costs for your visa type.
Intensive English Centre
Highgate Intensive English Centre (IEC) specialises in teaching English as an Additional Language or Dialect (EALD) to newly arrived students who are eligible to enrol in a public school in Western Australia. The IEC supports students in learning English and becoming familiar with the age-appropriate academic and social context of schools in Western Australia.
Attendance at an IEC is for up to 12 months (or 24 months where students hold a humanitarian visa), depending on the student’s visa and needs.
Students may be eligible to enrol in the IEC if they:
- Are in Years 1 to 6
- Meet citizenship, permanent residency, or visa requirements
- Are new to learning English because they are:
- Newly arrived in Australia (within 12 months)
- Recently returned to Australia after a period greater than 6 months
- New to school in Australia (within 12 months), and have been referred to us by their local school

Please note: Intensive English Centres have different local area boundaries from those of mainstream schools.
