Getting To School

Travelling to school can be a fun and healthy part of your day. It’s a great chance to talk with your child, build connection, and be active together. Even small changes, like walking or riding a few times a week, can make a big difference for your child and our community.

Why it helps

  • Builds healthy, active habits
  • Helps children feel calm, focused, and ready to learn
  • Makes school streets safer and less busy
  • Reduces traffic and keeps the air cleaner

You can use the free Your Move Journey Planner to find safe and simple routes to school. Once you get here, use the school map to find your way around.

Your Move Program

Highgate Primary School participates in the Your Move program. Your Move aims to increase the number of students (and parents) walking, riding or catching public transport to school. The best part is, we can earn points, rewards and grant funding by increasing our active travel to school. If you would like to learn more or get involved, please contact our Your Move Champion, Mrs Tania Pesce.

Ways to Get to School

Every family is different—choose what works best for you.

Walking

Walking to school is a simple way to be active and enjoy time together. It also helps reduce traffic around the school. Crosswalk attendants are available to help students cross the road safely at these intersections:

  • Beaufort St & Lincoln St
  • William St & Lincoln St
  • Bulwer St & Bulwer Ave

Dogs
Walking with your dog can be a fun and healthy way to enjoy the journey to school and give your pet some exercise, too. If you bring a dog or other pet, please say goodbye at the school gate—animals are not allowed on school grounds for safety and health reasons.

Bike or Scooter

Riding a bike or scooter is a fun and active way to travel to school.

To stay safe:

  • Always wear a helmet
  • Walk your bike or scooter inside school grounds
  • Use the bike racks near the main entrance
  • Bring a lock to secure your bike or scooter
  • Do not store bikes or scooters in classrooms

Visit Staying Safe On Your Bike for more helpful hints about bike safety.

Public Transport

Public transport is a convenient and affordable way to get to school. Primary and secondary students can travel for free on school days using a Student SmartRider card. The Transperth Journey Planner or Transperth app can help you plan your journey ahead of time.

You can apply for a Student SmartRider card online via the SmartRider Portal. Paper application forms are also available from the school Administration Office.

Driving

We understand that for some families, driving to school is the most practical option due to work, distance, or other commitments. If you are driving, you can drop children off in one of our ‘Kiss and Drive’ zones located on Lincoln Street and Bulwer Avenue.

To help keep everyone safe and traffic moving smoothly:

  • Children should exit the car from the left side
  • Parents and carers should remain in the vehicle
  • Please keep traffic flowing and avoid stopping for long periods

Please do not use the staff car park for drop-off or pick-up. It is important to keep this area clear at all times for staff access and emergencies.

Try Park and Walk

If you live far from school, you can still be active. Park and Walk means parking a short distance away from school and walking the rest of the way. It helps reduce traffic, teaches children road safety skills, and adds a little exercise to your day.

Street parking is available on many streets near the school. If you choose this option, remember to carefully read any parking signs so you don’t receive a fine.

Let’s get moving!

Working together, small changes can help create a healthier and safer school community.
