Positive Behaviour Support

- We show respect
- We are responsible
In 2016, Highgate PS unanimously decided to establish a positive, proactive school-wide behaviour management framework called Positive Behaviour Support (PBS). This practice was selected to further enhance the social culture, learning and teaching environment in the school as well as to provide the individual behaviour supports needed to achieve academic and social successes for all students. The PBS team was established to guide the school through the seven essential components that make up the PBS framework.
The seven components are:
- Leadership
- Defining expected behaviour
- Teaching expected behaviour
- Encouraging expected behaviour
- Engagement strategies
- Responding to unproductive behaviour
- Ongoing monitoring
Positive Behaviour Support enables the development of effective school-wide routines and consistent responses to behaviour, both positive and negative. It is a research-based process that is proven to create safer and more effective schools. PBS relies on organisational change strategies to improve the social culture, learning and teaching environment in schools, and to provide the individual behaviour supports needed to achieve academic and social success for all students.
Schools implementing PBS build on existing strengths, complementing and organising current programming and strategies. Positive Behaviour Support is not a curriculum, a program or an intervention. It differs from any program currently in place in that it is a whole-school approach to improvement.
